Would you rather is a conversation game: one person asks a question with two options, everyone picks one and explains why.

Good would you rather questions turn a quiet room into a lively debate in about ten seconds. How to play would you rather

  1. Sit in a circle or around a table. Choose someone to go first, often the youngest player or whoever has the next birthday.
  2. Ask a question. The asker reads a question aloud, either from the list or using the picker below.
  3. Everyone chooses. Each player picks one option. No saying "neither" and no picking both. That is the only real rule.
  4. Explain your choice. Players take turns giving a quick reason. This is where the fun is, because the reasons are often funnier than the answers.
  5. Pass the turn. The player on the left asks the next question. Keep going as long as the group is enjoying it.

For a quicker version with a big group, have everyone point left for the first option and right for the second on the count of three, then ask only the outnumbered side to defend their choice.

Ways to keep score

The standard game has no winner, which is part of its charm. If your group likes a little competition, try one of these:

  • Majority rules: players score a point when they pick the same option as most of the group. It rewards reading the room.
  • Best argument: after each question, the asker awards a point to the most convincing or funniest explanation.
  • Guess my answer: before a player answers, everyone else guesses which option they will pick. Correct guessers score a point.

Variations

  • Would you rather chain: the player who answers must then write a new question that builds on their choice. If someone picks flying, the next question might be "Would you rather fly only at night or only in the rain?"
  • Theme nights: stick to one category for the whole game, such as holidays at a Christmas party or travel before a family trip.
  • Silent vote: everyone writes their choice on a slip of paper, the asker reads them out, and the group guesses who picked what.
  • Two minute debate: split into two teams, give each team one side, and let them argue for two minutes before a neutral judge picks the winner.

Tips for a great round

  • Match the question to the group. Start light with funny or food questions, then move to hard choices once everyone is relaxed.
  • Ask a follow up. "What would you do first?" or "Would you change your mind if it lasted a year?" turns a quick answer into a story.
