Spoons Card Game Rules: How to Play Spoons

In Spoons you pass cards quickly around the table to collect four of a kind, then grab a spoon; the player left without one gets a letter or is out.

Players
3 to 13
Ages
7+
Time
15 to 30 minutes
You need
Standard 52-card deck, spoons (one fewer than the number of players)

If you want to know how to play spoons card game style, think of it as musical chairs at the card table. Everyone passes cards as fast as they can, trying to collect four of a kind, while keeping one eye on a small pile of spoons in the middle. There is always one spoon too few, so the moment someone grabs, everyone else scrambles. It is loud, quick and perfect for family gatherings and sleepovers.

Quick rules

  • 3 or more players. Put spoons in the middle, one fewer than the number of players.
  • Deal 4 cards to each player. The dealer keeps the rest as a draw pile.
  • The dealer draws, keeps or passes a card to the left; cards flow around the table continuously.
  • Always hold exactly 4 cards after passing.
  • When you get four of a kind, take a spoon. Then everyone grabs one.
  • The player without a spoon gets a letter: S, P, O, O, N. Spell it out and you are out.
  • Last player in the game wins.

What you need

  • One standard 52-card deck. For 9 or more players, use two decks shuffled together.
  • Spoons, one fewer than the number of players. Any small soft object works, such as wooden spoons, plastic spoons or bottle caps for young children.
  • A table everyone can reach the center of comfortably.

Setup

  1. Seat everyone around the table and place the spoons in the center, within reach of all players. Arrange them in a circle or a loose pile.
  2. Choose a dealer. Shuffle and deal 4 cards face down to each player.
  3. The dealer places the rest of the deck face down beside them as the draw pile.
  4. Players look at their cards but keep them hidden.

How to play

Passing cards

  1. The dealer takes the top card from the draw pile, so they briefly hold 5 cards.
  2. The dealer chooses one card to discard and passes it face down to the player on their left.
  3. That player picks up the passed card, chooses one card to pass on, and slides it to their left.
  4. This continues around the table. The last player, to the dealer's right, discards into a face-down trash pile.
  5. The dealer keeps drawing new cards at their own speed, so cards flow constantly. Nobody waits for the next player; speed is part of the fun.
  6. Never hold more than 5 cards at once. If cards are piling up beside you, pass faster.

Grabbing the spoons

  1. As soon as you hold four cards of the same rank (for example four 7s), quietly take a spoon from the center.
  2. Once any spoon is taken, every other player may grab one, even without four of a kind.
  3. One player will be left without a spoon. That player gets a letter.
  4. Many players take the first spoon sneakily so others do not notice right away. That is allowed and part of the game.

Running out of cards

If the draw pile runs out, the dealer picks up the trash pile, shuffles it, and keeps drawing.

Next round

Return the spoons to the center, collect and shuffle all cards, and deal again. The deal usually passes to the left.

Scoring

EventResult
You get four of a kind and take a spoonSafe for the round
You grab a spoon after someone elseSafe for the round
You are left without a spoonTake the next letter of S-P-O-O-N
You spell the whole word SPOONOut of the game; remove one spoon

Some groups skip letters and simply eliminate the spoonless player each round, removing one spoon each time. This is quicker for large groups.

How to win

When a player is eliminated, take one spoon away so there is still one fewer than the number of players. The game ends with the last two players and a single spoon. Whoever grabs that spoon wins.

Variations

  • False grab penalty: if you take the first spoon without four of a kind, you get a letter instead.
  • Pig or Tongue: instead of spoons, the first player to make four of a kind touches their nose or sticks out their tongue, and the last to copy gets a letter.
  • Spoons across the room: for older kids and teens, place the spoons on another table so players must get up and walk briskly. Keep the path clear and avoid running.
  • Two decks: use 104 cards for big groups so four of a kind comes faster.

Tips and strategy

  • Choose your target early. Collect the rank you already hold two of, and pass everything else straight on.
  • Watch the spoons and other players' hands more than your own cards.
  • Take the first spoon calmly. A quiet grab can buy you several seconds before anyone notices.
  • Do not slow down to think. Hesitating causes a pile-up and gives your neighbors more chances.

Common mistakes

  • Holding on to a passed card while you think. Pick up, decide and pass in one smooth move.
  • Passing two cards at once by accident, which leaves you short and confuses the flow.
  • Forgetting to remove a spoon after someone is eliminated, so nobody ever misses out.
  • Staring at your cards and missing the first quiet grab.

House rules to agree first

  • Be gentle when grabbing: no pulling spoons out of hands, and keep fingernails away from faces. Use plastic spoons with young children.
  • Whether players get letters or are knocked out at once.
  • What counts as a false grab, and its penalty.

Questions people ask

How many spoons do you need for spoons card game?

Use one fewer spoon than the number of players. With 6 players you need 5 spoons. Remove one spoon every time a player is eliminated.

How many cards do you get in spoons?

Each player is dealt 4 cards. During play you briefly hold 5 when you pick up a passed card, then pass one on so you are back to 4.

What are the spoons card game rules for the last two players?

When only two players remain, place one spoon between them and keep passing. The dealer passes to the other player, who discards to the trash pile. The first to make four of a kind and grab the spoon, or the faster grabber once it is taken, wins.

Can you take a spoon without four of a kind?

Only after someone else has already taken one. Taking the first spoon without four of a kind is a false grab, and in most groups that player gets a letter.

What happens when the deck runs out in spoons?

The dealer picks up the face-down trash pile from the last player, shuffles it and keeps drawing. Play does not stop.
