Capture the Flag Rules: How to Play

In capture the flag, two teams each guard a flag in their own territory and try to grab the other team's flag and carry it back across the center line without being tagged.

Players
8 to 40, in two teams
Ages
7+
Time
15 to 45 minutes per game
You need
2 flags (bandanas or cloths), cones or rope for boundaries, colored pinnies or wristbands

These capture the flag rules cover the classic outdoor game of chasing, guarding and teamwork played at camps, schools, youth groups and backyard parties. Two teams split a field, hide a flag in their half, and race to bring the other team's flag home. It needs almost no equipment, works for a big group, and gives quick runners, careful planners and brave defenders all something to do.

Quick rules

  • Split players into two equal teams and divide the field in half with a center line.
  • Each team places its flag in its own half, visible and reachable.
  • In your own half you can tag opponents; in the other half you can be tagged.
  • Tagged players go to the other team's jail until a teammate frees them.
  • Grab the other team's flag and carry it back across the center line to win.
  • If you are tagged while carrying the flag, drop it where you were tagged (or return it) and go to jail.

What you need

  • A large open space: a field, park or gym. A soccer field is ideal for 20 to 30 players.
  • Two flags, such as bandanas, towels or pool noodles, in team colors.
  • Cones, rope or chalk to mark the center line, boundaries and jails.
  • Pinnies, wristbands or colored shirts so teams can tell each other apart.
  • A whistle for the referee. Our random team generator makes picking fair teams quick.

Setup

  1. Mark the field. Set clear outer boundaries and a center line splitting it into two equal territories.
  2. Place the flags. Each team puts its flag near the back of its half. It must be visible from a few steps away and not tied down or held.
  3. Mark a flag zone (optional): a circle about 10 feet wide around each flag that defenders may not enter, so the flag cannot be guarded too closely.
  4. Mark the jails. Each team has a jail area in its own half, usually near a back corner, about 10 feet square.
  5. Agree the rules on tagging, jail and safe zones, and give teams 2 minutes to plan.

How to play

Starting the game

Both teams start in their own halves. On the whistle, players can cross the center line. Most teams split into attackers who try to grab the flag and defenders who protect their territory, with a few players switching as needed.

Tagging

  1. You may only tag opponents who are in your team's half.
  2. A tag is a one-hand touch on the back, shoulder or arm. No pushing, grabbing, tackling or tripping.
  3. A tagged player walks straight to the jail with a hand raised so others know they are out of play.

Jail and jailbreaks

  1. Prisoners stay inside the jail until rescued.
  2. A teammate who reaches the jail without being tagged can free a prisoner by tagging them.
  3. The rescuer and the freed player get a free walk back to their own half with hands up, and cannot be tagged on the way.
  4. Standard rule: one rescuer frees one prisoner. Some groups free the whole jail at once.

Capturing the flag

  1. A player who reaches the flag picks it up and runs for home.
  2. The flag must be carried, not thrown, unless your group allows passing.
  3. If the carrier is tagged, the flag is dropped on the spot (or returned to its base, by agreement) and the carrier goes to jail.
  4. If the carrier crosses the center line into their own half, their team wins the round.

Play best of three or five rounds, switching sides each round.

How to win

Be the first team to carry the other team's flag safely back to your own half. If you set a time limit, a team holding more prisoners at the whistle can be declared the winner.

Variations

  • Capture the flag for kids: use a smaller field, a shorter jail time (count to 20 and walk back), and no flag guards.
  • Multiple flags: each team hides three flags; the first to collect two wins.
  • Night capture the flag: use glow sticks as flags and wristbands. Only on a familiar, obstacle-free field with adult supervision.
  • Safe zones: a hoop or two in enemy territory where attackers cannot be tagged for up to 5 seconds.
  • Sock tag: each player tucks a sock or flag in their waistband; pulling it counts as a tag, which keeps contact gentle.
  • Indoor version: in a gym, use beanbags as flags and walking-only rules.

Tips and strategy

  • Send attackers in groups. When defenders chase one runner, another can slip through.
  • Keep one or two defenders near your jail to stop jailbreaks.
  • Use the sidelines. Defenders tend to bunch in the middle.
  • Rescue teammates before attacking the flag; more players means more pressure.
  • Agree on simple calls, like a whistle or a team word, to launch a group rush.

House rules to agree first

  • Exact boundaries and what happens if you step out (usually you go to jail).
  • Whether the flag can be passed or thrown.
  • How many prisoners one rescuer frees, and whether a flag dropped after a tag goes back to base.
  • Safety: gentle tags only, no tackling, water breaks, and a time limit on hot days.

Questions people ask

How do you play capture the flag?

What happens when you get tagged in capture the flag?

You walk to the other team's jail and wait there until a teammate tags you to free you. Both of you then get a free walk back to your own side. If you were carrying the flag, you drop it.

How do you play capture the flag with kids?

Use a smaller field, gentle one-hand tags and short jail times, such as counting to 20 before walking back. Keep teams small and adult referees on the field, and skip flag guards so younger kids get more chances to score.
