Passing the Parcel Game: Rules and Fun Tasks

In passing the parcel, players pass a wrapped gift around a circle while music plays; whoever holds it when the music stops unwraps one layer, and the last layer reveals the main prize.

Players
6 to 30
Ages
3+
Time
10 to 20 minutes
You need
A small gift, wrapping paper or newspaper, small sweets or task chits, a music player

The passing the parcel game is a favourite at Indian birthday parties, school functions and kitty parties because it needs almost nothing, suits all ages and keeps everyone laughing. A parcel wrapped in many layers goes round the circle while music plays. When the music stops, the person holding it tears off one layer and finds a small treat or a funny task. Whoever unwraps the final layer wins the main prize.

Quick rules

  • Everyone sits in a circle. One person controls the music and does not play.
  • The parcel is passed from hand to hand while the music plays.
  • When the music stops, whoever holds the parcel removes one layer only.
  • Each layer may hold a small sweet, a sticker or a task chit to perform.
  • Music starts again and passing continues.
  • The player who opens the last layer wins the main gift.

What you need

  • A main prize: a toy, a box of chocolates, a small gift hamper or a house plant for adults.
  • Wrapping paper, old newspaper or gift paper, and cello tape.
  • Small treats for the layers, such as toffees, stickers, erasers or hair clips.
  • Task chits (see the list below) folded into some layers.
  • A phone or speaker with peppy songs. Peppy Hindi film songs work brilliantly.

Setup

  1. Wrap the main prize in its first layer.
  2. Add layers. Wrap another sheet round it, slipping a toffee or chit between layers. Make one layer per player for kids' parties so everyone gets a turn, or 10 to 15 layers for adults.
  3. Use different papers for each layer so people know when a layer is finished.
  4. Seat everyone in a circle on chairs or the floor.
  5. Choose the music controller, usually a parent or the host, who sits facing away from the circle.

How to play

  1. Give the parcel to any player and start the music.
  2. Players pass the parcel to the right, one at a time, without holding on to it. No throwing.
  3. The music controller stops the music at random, every 10 to 30 seconds.
  4. The player holding the parcel removes just one layer and keeps the treat inside.
  5. If there is a task chit, they read it aloud and do the task. Then the music starts again.
  6. Repeat until only the last layer remains. The person who opens it keeps the main prize.

Making it fair for little ones

At children's parties, the host can quietly watch who has already had a turn and stop the music when a new child holds the parcel. This way every child unwraps at least one layer, and nobody goes home upset.

Passing the parcel game tasks

Tasks for kids

  • Sing "Happy Birthday" to the birthday child.
  • Do 5 jumping jacks.
  • Make the sound of your favourite animal.
  • Say the alphabet backwards from M.
  • Walk like a penguin around the circle.
  • Name 5 fruits in 10 seconds.
  • Tell a joke or a riddle.
  • Hop on one leg 10 times.
  • Make a funny face and hold it for 5 seconds.
  • Say a tongue twister three times fast.

Tasks for kitty parties and adults

  • Sing two lines of your favourite old Hindi song.
  • Do a 20-second dance step and teach it to the group.
  • Act out a famous film dialogue without saying the film's name.
  • Share your funniest wedding moment.
  • Say something nice about the person on your left.
  • Name 5 sweets from 5 different states.
  • Walk like a model across the room.
  • Recite a short shayari or poem.
  • Speak for 30 seconds on "my favourite festival" without saying "umm".
  • Describe your dream holiday in exactly three words.

Tasks for mixed family groups

  • Do an impression of someone in the room (kindly).
  • Guess three songs hummed by the next player.
  • Name 5 things in the room that are red.
  • Tell everyone your favourite childhood game.
  • Balance a book on your head for 10 seconds.

Scoring

There is no scoring in the classic game. Each layer gives a small reward, and the final layer gives the main prize. If you play several parcels, you can give a point for each completed task and use a simple scoreboard.

How to win

The winner is the player who removes the final layer and reveals the main gift. In the elimination version, the last player left in the circle wins.

Variations

  • Elimination: whoever holds the parcel when the music stops is out after doing their task. The last player left wins the prize.
  • Two-way passing: the controller shouts "reverse" and the parcel changes direction.
  • Theme parcels: a Diwali parcel with diyas and mithai, or a Holi parcel with colour packets.
  • Without a parcel: pass a cushion or a balloon and pick a task chit from a bowl when the music stops, similar to hot potato.
  • Musical tasks: combine with antakshari, where the player must sing a song starting with a given letter.

Tips and strategy

  • Keep the music controller's back to the circle so stops feel truly random.
  • Use thin paper for layers, as thick tape slows the game down.
  • Keep tasks short, under 30 seconds, so the energy stays high.
  • Let shy players swap a task with a simpler one, such as telling a joke.
  • Keep sweets wrapped and age-appropriate. Avoid small hard items for toddlers.

House rules to agree first

  • Only one layer per stop, even if the paper tears.
  • No holding the parcel when you hear the music fading.
  • Tasks must be done, or swapped once with a fresh chit.
